Documentary photo-exhibition ЇЇсторія (Her Story) 2-17/09/11

Opening of the documentary photo-exhibition ЇЇсторія (Her Story) was held on September 2nd, 2011 in the Slobozhanshchyna Art Gallery, devoted to the 20th anniversary of Independence of Ukraine. The exhibition is organized by the Main Directorate for Family, Youth and Sports Affairs of Kharkiv Regional State Administration.

The following projects are presented at the exhibition:

The International Women's Day – History in Photos;

The exhibits of the Museum of Women’s History, Female and Gender Movement History.

The project of International Women's Day – History in Photos is devoted to the 100th anniversary of the International Women's day and is created with financial support of EU Representation in Ukraine, the UN Development Programs, the World Bank, the UN Fund for Population Activities, and UN United Programs on HIV/AIDS. 100 photos are collected here, reflecting the history of the Ukrainian women for the period 1911 to 2011. For the first time the photo project has been presented in the Ukrainian House. in March, 2011. In June, the project has been transferred under the Program of Equal Possibilities and Women’s Rights in Ukraine of the EU-PROON of the Museum of Women’s History, Female and Gender Movement History.

This project is an attempt to highlight, make obvious the role of common Ukrainian women which did not try to "go down in history", but created this history with their own lives. At the same time, this is an attempt to see the woman in the context of the time, to understand the problems they faced and to give the chance to spectators, men and women, to think of what was the women’s way during these hundred years, what was the society and what it demanded and expected from a woman, who was the woman herself and what she aspired for. The photos presented in the project are gathered from open sources, the G.F. Pshenichny Central State Archive of Cinema, the Photo Documents and Records, the Kharkiv Region State Archive, the holds of the V.G.Korolenko Central Scientific Library (Kharkiv), the archive of the Kharkiv Art Museum, the collection of the Museum of Women’s History, Female and Gender Movement History, the Klavdia Shulzhenko Museum (Kharkiv), the author's photo albums and projects, family archives …

The Museum of Women’s History, Female and Gender Movement History is the first and a unique gender museum in Ukraine yet, and it is being established in Kharkiv at the initiative of the gender sensitive public with the Main Directorate for Family, Youth and Sports Affairs of Kharkiv Regional State Administration and the Program of Equal Possibilities and Women’s Rights in Ukraine. The partners of the project are the Global Fund for Women, the Ukrainian Women’s Fund, the gender oriented public organizations, the international network of women’s museums. The Museum collection contains over 400 exhibits which are partly presented in the Regional Gender Resource Centre (Svobody Square, 5, Derzhprom, 6th fl., 821 rm., phone: 057-700-94-37). The purpose of the Museum activity is to educate and inform the public on gender matters, to assist in implementation of the state gender policy.

The exhibition ЇЇсторія is open at: Svobody Square, 5, Derzhprom, the Regional Art Gallery, on Tuesdays till Saturdays, September 2nd till September 17th, 10.00 to 19.00.
